Press Release December 2004:

Otium Software's Utilistor

Raises the Bar for SRM by Bringing it Down to the Desktop

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oxfordshire, UK – 8th December – Otium Software the leading UK-based provider of affordable Storage Resource Management (SRM) software today unveiled Utilistor, a suite of SRM tools aimed at users from Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) through to departmental IT in larger organisations. Utilistor is a modular software product, offering disk and volume monitoring, data investigation and analysis, as well as easy-to-use centralised batch job scheduling. With Utilistor Otium is breaking new ground by offering SRM with a price point and ease of use that finally allows even the smallest IT department to deploy automated tools to understand, manage and control data growth. Otium is unique in bringing the realms of SRM to the desktop, and this has been driven by the demands and requests that are coming from the SME sector.

Nick Pitman, IT Manager at the colour measurement and colorimetric analysis company Tintometer Ltd, is already reaping the benefits of Utilistor “I don't have the time to keep checking disk space or to constantly conduct disk upgrades. Utilistor means that a disk will never get full without me knowing in advance. It also proactively provides me with reports which mean I can identify and remove data that I don't need.”

Otium's Utilistor includes “Disk Space Reporter – Desktop” (DSR-Desktop), a module that plugs into the centralised Utilistor GUI to allow IT managers to generate reports on data and disk usage on their users' PCs.

Andy Brewerton, technical director at Otium, explains “We are continually striving to bring SRM to IT managers in companies of every size. Just because some data resides on desktops it does not mean it does not need management. Our DSR-Desktop is the first product that allows IT managers to quickly identify the nature, growth, and profile of desktop data.”

Brewerton continues “One of Otium's objectives is to simplify storage management to enable SMEs and home users to understand its benefits. As a result we do not talk about ILM, a concept that for many SMEs can be daunting, instead we refer to ‘storage zones'. This conveys the idea of two or three different types of storage devices offering different levels of protection and performance. We advise end users on how to use SRM to quickly and easily classify and then store data in the appropriate storage zone.'

The desktop is one such zone and usually it is an unprotected one. IT managers need to be able to identify important information saved on these machines and ensure that data is moved or copied to a protected zone.

The Utilistor Suite starts at £200 per server and the DSR-Desktop module starts at £99 for 10 PCs.
